San Diego beats Philadelphia to advance to Western Finals

Dane Dobbie’s second goal of the game at 6:58 of the fourth quarter proved to be the winner as the San Diego Seals held off the Philadelphia Wings 9-8 on Saturday night in a quarterfinal game of the NLL at Pechanga Arena in San Diego.

“We have another weekend and that means the world to us,” Seals rookie defenseman Patrick Shoemay said in the ESPNU postgame interview.

Shoemay scored his first two career NLL goals as the Seals advance to the Western Conference Finals against Colorado.

“Those are the types of games that I feel like you play the most for free,” Shoemay said in the ESPNU post-match interview. “You know what awaits us. You know there are two outcomes that can happen and you need to be at peace with that when you enter matches.

Dobbie had two goals and two assists in the game while Austin Staats led the way with two goals and three assists. Between the posts, Frank Scigliano made 37 saves.

“Frankie is the backbone of this team,” Shoemay said. “He’s the best goalkeeper I’ve played with. He’s a leader on and off the pitch and he got up tonight.

The Seals (10-8 in the regular season) clinched the first playoff win in franchise history and San Diego outscored Philadelphia 49-45 to avenge a 13-12 overtime loss to the Wings in the regular season .

For Philadelphia (9-9 regular season record), Matt Rambo scored three goals while Kevin Crowley had five assists and Zach Higgins made 40 saves.

The Seals will face the Colorado Mammoth in the best-of-three Western Conference Finals with Game 1 scheduled for Friday night in San Diego (10 p.m. ET ESPN+/TSN.ca). Colorado secured their ticket to the next round with a 16-12 quarter-final win over Calgary.

The Seals won the season series against the Mammoth two to one. San Diego picked up a 13-4 win over Colorado on Dec. 11and then the Seals beat the Mammoth 9-7 on March 19and in San Diego. Colorado salvaged the third and final game between the two teams in the regular season by winning at home 11-10 on April 9and at the ball arena.
